Yucky season is back: diving in the haze at Cress St

Published on 2013-04-20 18:57:05

You know it's really bad when you come back ashore with more pictures you took of your buddies before the dive, at the surface, than during the dive.

Today, it was plain bad. Very low visibility, less than 3 ft most of the time, probably a couple feet more sometimes, very strong swirly surge that sometimes makes you think your being washmachined (yes, this is a word. At least now it is), and a nasty surf that looked very manageable but still pushed me on my knees just when I thought I was past the surf zone... Oh well, my credibility had gone a long time ago already.

We dove one of my favorite spots, Cress St. I was excited to go see the leopard sharks again, but well, not this time. I came back with 4 pictures of critters. Two lobsters and two abalones. I think the lobsters are just one lobster at two different angles. I tried a couple of sunbursts in the kelp at low depth, but even there it was pretty ugly. I was shooting at Tv 1/500s to get the sun rays in, but all the particulates were giving the camera a hard time to focus. I also shot "divers in the dark", Tv 1/80s no flash, trying to capture their beams of light and post-processed the pictures for semi-black & white, but well not much to say about that...

At the end, to show how bad it was, I shot a one minute video of the mess. Hope you like it as much as I hated filming it...

That was probably the last dive for quite a while. I will not be diving for about a month, then Summer comes and with it a boatload of tourists parking everywhere anytime. Maybe I'll do some boat dives, but I will most likely not put my fins in Laguna Beach's waters before September, when all the tourists are gone... See you then.

And the video:
