Why choose point-and-shoot versus DSLR?

Published on 2010-04-03 11:32:15

There's no secret, if you want to shoot high quality pictures, your choice should be DSLR.

Unfortunately, it comes with a price. Actually many prices...

  • The real price. An entry level Canon DSLR will cost you about $800 with cheap lenses. Add a macro and a wide angle and you're at about $2,000 still with cheap lenses. The underwater case for that baby will hit you pretty hard at between $2,000 and $4,000 depending on the brand and quality. You will definitively need an axternal flash since no DSLR case will let you shoot with the embedded flash and you're up $1,500 to $3,000 depending on how many of these pods you want. Final pricetag between $5,500 and $9,000. You'd better take the DAN insurance for that!

  • Size, weight, clumsiness. The gear above probably weights around 20 lbs. It should be perfectly fine underwater but remember than before you could jump in the water, you'll have to carry that shit. On a cramped boat that's also a lot of pain because that thing is giganormous and looks like a terapod with a big eye...

  • Lenses. A few very high end cases will let you switch lenses underwater. However, most won't. So you'll have to decide before the dive if you're gonna look at the big picture or crawl the reef for small stuff.
  • As you know, this website has already made the choice of the way of the point-and-shoot.
