Don't look at me in the eyes

Published on 2010-04-23 23:34:58

I heard that trick at the Scuba Show in Long Beach a couple of years ago and have been using it since then. When I see a cool fish and I know I need to get closer for the perfect shot, I approach it without looking at it. You know, like I don't see you, I'm not interested in you (you can even whistle in your reg to feel like you're invisible and stuff, but the noise may scare the fish off too).
Another important thing is to not breathe during your approach because even if you're not looking, your bubbles will give you away. Once you're close enough start readying the camera and if the fish is still here (remember, you're not looking), just snap the pix!
Works well with dumb fish. Octopus usually don't get fooled (they're too smart for that).
Now go and practice!
