When surfers are happy, divers go to San Diego for the 11th Underwater Film Exhibition

Published on 2010-09-19 09:50:36

Sunday was supposed to be the monthly Laguna Sea Dwellers Beach Dive & BBQ. Well it ended up being simply the BBQ.

We had been warned that two South swells were going to collide in Laguna Beach on Sunday, creating high surf and deadly rip-current. It looked indeed a little rough on Main Beach and the abundance of parking spots at 10am on Cliff Drive spoke volume of how bad it was in the coves.

There was no divers in the water in Heisler, Diver's Cove and Fisherman's. Shaw's looked deserted too. That's a good sign. Divers are becoming more cautious. Or it's simply not Summer anymore and classes from inland or out-of-state are finished.

Anyway, Picnic beach had some impressive sets in the 6ft range, with a lot of undertoe. The beach had been eaten pretty bad and the city will probably have to re-sand it like they did back in February when we had the big storms.

Hopefully the BBQ was still going and a few of the Laguna Sea Dwellers showed up and all in all it was a nice lunch at the beach with friends.

Later in the afternoon I headed South for the 11th San Diego Underwater Film Exhibition (SDUFEX) where I dove with octopus, manta rays, whale sharks, tiger sharks, reef shark, horn sharks, sea lions, garibaldis (oh no!), sperm whales, humpback whales and more in the comfort of my seat at the Qualcomm movie theatre. Can't wait for next year! Maybe I'll enter one of my short films...
